Cooks Mill, Cathederal Ranges

Trip 11, 29th September 2017

Off we went for the 1st trip of the season, for our 1st time to the Cathederal Ranges.  With it being grand final weekend we had the public holiday on the Friday so we headed off early to make the most of the day.  A 2 night stay at Cooks Mill Campsite.  An easy drive up through the Black Spur and on to the Ranges.  Arriving about 10am we got set up quickly and settled in.  Grabbed some lunch and headed out on a walk to Ned’s Gullly.  Great walk through the trees down to the other campsite.  And back up the road to make the return a bit shorter for Mitchy.

In the after noon the family stayed back at camp to explore and I went for a drive to explore options for the next day.  Dinner and fun around the fire in the evening saw out the day.

The next morning we headed out early for a drive to The Mt Sugarloaf car park for what we thought was going to be a quick explore of the tracks.  But before long we had made a tricky climb up some rocks, and made the call to push onto the summit.  A call which very soo;after another tricky scramble up some rocks we thought we might regret.  After taking some advise from a couple coming down we again decided to push on.  After yet another tricky rock climb we again were regretting going on.

We were given a side root by a couple of experienced climbers to avoid a vertical climb which we weren’t too sure about.  It enclosed a bit of caving work but was a much better option.  Now way past the point of no return we pushed for the summit and after a very hairy climtothe top we arrived.  But boy it was worth it.  The boys got a good lesson in perseverance and not giving up.....  and the views were amazing.

Descending was easier with only a couple of tricky sections, which involved a lot of bum sliding and staggered descents.  All in all a great climb/walk.

Back to camp for the afternoon and to listen to Richmond win the grand final and the day was done.

The river next to camp was pure and very pretty.  Th3 kids loved it.

Yet another successful trip and yet another dry pack up.  A stop at the Beechworth bakery in Healesville for lunch and we were all done.
